Now meet “Etrusco UNICO”, for Italy, 1990. This ball was the first official one to be filled with polyurethane foam inside, thanks to what the ball became quicker and entirely waterproof. It was decorated with heads of Etruscan lions, historical heritage of Italy.

In 1994 it was replaced

by “Questra” in the USA World Cup. It was competely new design, inspired by star technologies, Its energyreturinig inside layer put on completely new standards of ball obedience and softness.

What could be more modern and perfect, I ask myself? well, a new wonder appears in France in 1998 under the name of “Tricolore” – the first multicolor ball in World Cup history, symbolizing French flag and national symbol – rooster tail.  Its polyurethane cells were filled with gas, that provided better ball contact.

It is replaced in 2002 by “Fevernova” in China and Corea. First since 1978, its external design differs from the “Tango”. Colours remind of the far East symbolics, and three level textile layer promisses increased precision of the kick.

And finally the last but one – the “Teamgeist”, meaning “Teamspirit” for Germany Cup 2006. 32-pieces design became the story of the past. Its frame and pannels joined by the technology of termoglueing made surface more even and woterproveness even more waterproof, making kicks exact as never. Colours are traditional black and white, those of the German team, with golden egde for traditional FIFA colour.

The name “telescope” covers a wide range of instruments, ideed. Let’s see what would be good for an amateur every day use.

Radio telescopes

Those parabolic-shape very precise ones capturing tiny wavelengths are used more for laboratory researches and will hardly be of use to you as a gift. But scientists enoy them a lot and sometimes register some unusual signals tanks to them!

X-ray and gamma-ray telescopes

Optical telescopes.

This one is the most common in use for observation, photography, studies. It  increases the apparent angular size of distant objects as well as their apparent brightness. It could have different optical elements for different purposes, and consequently this kind devides into:

• The refracting telescope which uses lenses to form an image. These are the classic “department store look” telescopes that use refracting lenses housed in a long, thin tube mounted on a tripod. Refractors are great for viewing the sun, moon and planets where magnification detail is important but brightness is not.

Advantages

• Little or no maintenance and is easy to use.
• Reliable due to the simplicity of design.
• Excellent for lunar, planetary or binary star viewing.
• Good for terrestrial viewing.
• High contrast images due to its clear aperture (no central obstruction).
• Good colour correction in achromatic designs and excellent in apochromatic, flourite and ED designs.

Disadvantages

• Usually more expensive per inch of aperture than Newtonians(reflectors) or Catadioptrics.
• Heavier, longer and bulkier than equivalent aperture Newtonians or Catadioptrics.
• The cost and bulk factors usually limit the maximum size to smaller apertures.
• Less suited for observation of deep sky objects such as distant galaxies and nebulae because of practical aperture limitations.

• The reflecting telescope which uses an arrangement of mirrors to form an image. These are large telescopes that use mirrors housed in large tubes often mounted in a low “rocker” style mount (called a Dobsonian mount). Reflectors are “light buckets” and are great for viewing faint, deep-sky objects like galaxies, star clusters and nebula.

Advantages

• Lowest cost per inch of aperture compared to refractors and Catadioptrics since mirrors can be produced at less cost than lenses in medium to large apertures.
• Reasonably compact and portable up to focal lengths of 1000mm.
• Excellent for faint deep sky objects such as remote galaxies, nebulae and star clusters due to the generally fast focal ratios (f/4 to f/8).
• Reasonably good for lunar and planetary work.
• Good for deep sky astrophotography (but not as convenient and more difficult to use than Catadioptrics).
• Low in optical aberrations and deliver very bright images.

Disadvantages

• Requires regular alignment (collimation) of optics in order to perform at its best. Badly aligned optics can make the image quality suffer quite dramatically.
• Primary mirror may require re-coating (usually after years of service).
• The open nature of the tube assembly could mean more complicated cleaning of mirror surfaces when compared to telescopes of other designs.

Generally not suited for terrestrial applications.

• Compound telescopes - also called cadioptric telescopes, use both refracting lenses and reflecting mirrors in their design to provide a compact form factor. Compound telescopes include those of Schmidt, Cassegrain (Cass), Maksutov (Mak) and hybrid designs.

Advantages

• Best all-around, all-purpose telescope design. Combines the optical advantages of both lenses and mirrors while cancelling their disadvantages.
• Excellent optics with razor sharp images over a wide field.
• Excellent for deep sky observing or astrophotography with fast films or CCD’s.
• Very good for lunar, planetary and binary star observing or photography.
• Excellent for terrestrial viewing or photography.
• Focal ratio generally around f/10. Useful for all types of photography. Avoid faster f/ratio telescopes (they yield lower contrast and increase aberrations). For faster astrophotography, use a Reducer/Corrector lens.
• Closed tube design reduces image degrading air currents.
• Most are extremely compact and portable.
• Easy to use.
• Durable and virtually maintenance free.
• Large apertures at reasonable prices and usually less expensive than equivalent aperture refractors.
• Most versatile type of telescope.
• More accessories available than with other types of telescopes.
• Best near focus capability of any type telescope

Disadvantages

• More expensive than Newtonians of equal aperture.
• It is not what people expect a telescope to look like.
• May suffer from image shift when focusing due to focus design moving the entire primary mirror.
• May have a narrower field of view when compared to similar aperture Newtonians or Refractors due to longer focal lengths.
